Lyrically Correct is a music trivia card game built for people who know every word of the songs they grew up with. Instead of singing, you answer rapid-fire questions about lyrics and music against the clock, in teams, with plenty of trash talk in between. It is a great fit for game nights, birthdays and family gatherings where the playlist already sparks debates.
This guide explains how the Lyrically Correct game works, the editions you can find, tips and house rules, and what to play when your group has been through every card.
What is Lyrically Correct?
Lyrically Correct is a card game made by a small independent company founded by two couples who love game night. The original edition, released in 2020, is the 90s and 2000s hip hop and R&B edition. Each box holds a deck of question cards plus a set of challenge cards, and the questions test how well you really know the music: many ask you to finish a line or recall a detail about a song or artist.
It is a team game for two or more players, and it is aimed at adults. Several retailers list it as 18+, so check the box if you are planning a family night with younger players.
How to play Lyrically Correct
The rules are quick to learn. Here is how a game runs.
1. Split into two teams. Each team gets its set of challenge cards.
2. Each team picks one player to answer first.
3. A player from Team A draws question cards and reads them to the answering player from Team B, and a 60-second timer starts.
4. The Team B player answers as many questions as they can. Each correct answer earns a point, and each wrong or passed card loses a point.
5. Once per round, the reading team can play a challenge card. The main timer pauses and the answering team gets 30 seconds to answer it. A correct answer earns three points, and a wrong answer gives the challenging team three points.
6. When the time runs out, the roles switch and Team B reads to Team A.
7. Keep rotating until the cards run out or you reach an agreed number of rounds. The team with the most points wins.
The challenge card is where most of the drama happens. Save it for the moment the other team is on a hot streak.
Lyrically Correct editions
The game has grown into a small series. Alongside the original 90s and 2000s hip hop and R&B edition, there have been editions such as the 80s Mixtape Edition, Oldies But Goodies, a Gospel edition called Revival, and a Pop Edition focused on 90s and 2000s pop. Expansion packs, such as an R&B pack, add fresh cards to an edition you already own.
A nice detail is that the cards can be mixed. If you own more than one edition you can shuffle them together for a deck that spans decades and genres, which levels the field when your group covers a wide range of ages. The lineup changes over time, so check the official Lyrically Correct site for the current editions.
Who is it for?
Lyrically Correct suits groups who enjoy competitive trivia and know their music, especially the eras the edition covers. It works best with four or more players so each team has someone to cheer and someone to argue with the answers. Because nobody has to sing, it is also a good pick for friends who would never touch a karaoke mic but will happily shout out the next line.
Tips and house rules
A few small tweaks make the game run smoother.
1. Mix ages on each team. If one generation knows the 90s and another knows the 2000s, split them up so both teams have coverage.
2. Agree on close answers. Decide before you start whether a nearly right line counts. A quick vote by the reading team settles disputes.
3. Rotate the answering player. Make sure everyone gets a turn in the hot seat, not just the strongest player.
4. Keep a scorekeeper. Points come and go quickly with the minus point for passes, so one person with a notepad saves arguments.
5. Play to a set number of rounds. It keeps the game from dragging and leaves energy for the next one.
What the Lyrically Correct questions are like
The Lyrically Correct game questions are short and fast, designed to be read and answered in seconds. Most of them test lyric recall, often by asking you to complete a famous line, while others touch on artists and songs from the era the edition covers. The timer does the rest: knowing an answer sitting on the couch is very different from producing it with your team shouting and the clock running. That pressure is what makes the game funny, and it is why even music experts slip up.
Hosting a Lyrically Correct night
Put on a playlist from the edition's era while people arrive, so everyone is already in the mood and quietly warming up their memory. Set out snacks within reach of both teams, keep the timer where everyone can see it, and appoint a neutral host if you have an odd number of players. The host can read the challenge cards, keep score and rule on close answers, which keeps the game moving and the arguments friendly.
When you have used every card
Every card game eventually meets a group that has seen every card. When the answers start sounding memorized, switch to a format that cannot run out.
The easiest is the finish the lyrics game: one person plays or sings the start of a line from a playlist of your choice, and the others race to complete it. You can pick the exact decade or genre your Lyrically Correct edition covers, so the feeling stays the same while the questions are brand new.
Another option is song association. Someone calls out a word and the next person has to sing a song containing it. Our list of song association words gives you hundreds of prompts, sorted from easy to hard, so you never run dry.
Alternatives to Lyrically Correct
If your group enjoys Lyrically Correct, a few other music party games scratch a similar itch in different ways.
Hitster by Jumbo is a listening game: you scan a card, a song plays through Spotify, and you place it on a timeline by release year. It is perfect for people who know the songs but not necessarily the words. Our roundup of games like Hitster compares it with other options.
Grab the Mic is a karaoke card game where a word is revealed and players race to grab a foam microphone and sing a line containing it. Read how Grab the Mic works.
Grab The Phone Karaoke is our own free app for two to eight players on one phone. A word lights up, whoever grabs the phone sings any song containing it for fifteen seconds, and the others vote thumbs up or down. A leaderboard ranks the winner. There are no cards to run out of and no account to create. If your Lyrically Correct night ends with everyone singing along anyway, this is a natural next round. Get the app.
Each of these is a different game with its own charm. Lyrically Correct stays the pick when you want team trivia that rewards real lyric knowledge.
