In traditional karaoke, you pick a song and the lyrics carry you. Word karaoke is different: you get one word, and every melody that word belongs to starts fighting for space in your brain at the same time.
These are the words that cause the most chaos, the most laughter, and the most unexpected brilliance.
TONIGHT
Belongs to at least fifteen songs across five genres. Watch someone freeze for three full seconds before deciding on "Tonight" from West Side Story, then pivot halfway through to Enrique Iglesias. Priceless.
FOREVER
Deceptively calm word. Triggers Chris Brown, Queen, Ben Harper, and that one song from the wedding everyone forgets the name of.
FIRE
Covers everything from Jimi Hendrix to Kasabian to Alicia Keys. Usually results in the singer doing a very dramatic voice drop.
HOLD ON
The song choice reveals everything about someone's age. Wilson Phillips or Chord Overstreet? Alabama Shakes or Michael Bublé? Instant personality test.
DANCE
A trap. There are too many options. People who say "Dance Monkey" immediately have to apologize for the next twenty minutes.
WILD
Brings out hidden talent. Something about the word makes people commit fully. Hozier, Troye Sivan, Jessie J. The range is extraordinary.
SHINE
The Newsboys contingent will find each other here. As will the Take That fans. Unlikely common ground.
THUNDER
Imagine Dragons has colonized this word entirely. But occasionally someone does AC/DC and the whole room loses their mind.
MAYBE
The saddest word on the list. Always beautiful. Always slightly heartbreaking, even when it's funny.
HEARTBEAT
The word that ends the night. Whoever draws this last goes fully theatrical. Every time. No exceptions.

The best part about word karaoke? You never know which song someone's brain will grab. That's the whole game.
