How the Grab the Mic game works

The setup is deliberately thin, which is most of why the game works. A word card is revealed to the group, everyone thinks for a second, and then it becomes a race: the first player to physically grab the foam microphone has to immediately sing a line from a real song that contains the word on the card. Sing a valid lyric and you score. Freeze, blank, or invent something nobody accepts, and you do not.

It plays with roughly two to ten people and suits ages eight and up, because the skill it actually tests is lyric recall rather than singing ability. Lucky Egg sells it in a few editions, including a second edition with a larger deck and a DUETS version with two microphones so two people sing at once.

The reason it lands with groups who normally avoid karaoke is that nobody chooses a song. There is no catalogue to scroll, no three-minute performance to survive, and no way to pick something safe that shows off your range. You get a word and about one second to commit, and that pressure is what makes the room laugh.

The full rules, step by step

1. Sit or stand in a circle with the microphone in the middle, within reach of everyone.
2. One player reveals the top word card and reads the word out loud.
3. Everyone races to grab the mic. Only the player holding it may sing.
4. That player immediately sings a line from a real, existing song containing the word.
5. The rest of the group judges it. If the lyric is real and the word is in it, the singer scores a point.
6. If the singer stalls or cannot produce a valid lyric, no point is awarded and play moves to the next card.
7. Keep going until the deck runs out or someone reaches an agreed score. Most points wins.

A few house rules worth adding, because the base game leaves them open. Put a hard timer on each turn, around five to fifteen seconds, or confident players will stall indefinitely. Agree in advance whether humming counts, whether repeated songs are allowed, and whether a word has to appear exactly or whether a close variant passes. Deciding these before the first round saves a lot of arguing later.
